Description:

Marriage Counselor Sim is a short visual-novel drama that places the player in the role of a marriage counselor discussing the issues plaguing a young couple. Gather information on the situation, meet an assortment of wacky characters, and interject when necessary to keep the conversation balanced. If you manage the couple’s affection for each other well enough, you might just be able to give them a happily ever after!

This project was developed in Unity Engine where I was responsible for the linked-list nodal dialogue system and the “heart meter“ that represents the state of your clients’ marriage. The dialogue system aimed to be easily expandable, allow for effects such as sounds, screen shakes, screen flashes, etc., and to branch into complex trees and loops. In retrospect, this design was overambitious for the limitations of the game jam during which this game was developed. Thus, while these systems are present in the final product, they are not all utilized to their full extent.

Created for the Chillennium 2023 48-hour game jam.

Transferable Skills Learned:

  • C# programming in Unity Engine

    • UI functionality (heart meter updating, clipboard notes updating)

    • Complex nodal dialogue system (text box points to the next, can bring up dialogue choices, can play FX, can affect the heart meter, etc.)
